Yes, it is March, and spring is just around the corner. As matter of fact, we “spring forward” with our clocks this Sunday (March 10). However, it is March, and basketball tournament time, which in Indiana means there is still one or two snow days left. With that in mind, here is a couple of car maintenance and driving tips for the end of winter.
Check your radiator and radiator hoses; make sure they are secure and not leaking, and that you have plenty of antifreeze.
Check your battery cables. They should be attached securely and clean. Brush off corrosion on cables and battery posts.
Check windshield wiper fluid, and top off reservoir.
Check windshield wipers, make sure they are in good shape.
Make sure your heater and defroster is in good working order.
Look at your headlights, taillights and turn signals. They should be working properly and be kept free of dirt and snow.
Keep at least a half of tank of gas in your vehicle to prevent gas line freezing.
For driving in a snow storm or just after, slow down! Leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.
If you lose traction, take your foot of the gas pedal and let the vehicle coast until you feel traction coming back.
If you start to slide, take your foot of the accelerator and steer into the direction you are sliding.
Be careful at intersections or where snow is plowed into a bank. It can be hard to detect another vehicle with the snow obstruction.
If you do get into an accident, call the police, and then call your insurance agent. We at Risk Managers will be happy to assist you with a claim, or to look at your current policy and help you to get the right coverage for your situation. Call us today!
